DKG Quebec President 2005-2007

Anne was a dedicated and much respected teacher and was Social Studies department head at Rosemere High School for many years. She was an active member of Girl Guides and the Montreal Council of Women. She was devoted to the young people in her church and was a tireless worker at St. Paul’s in Lachine, where she was a member of the choir and of the altar guild.

DKG Quebec State Treasurer

Phyllis was a chemistry teacher at Mount Royal and Lachine High Schools, later a Vice Principal at Lachine High School under the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal. Phyllis was known as a Renaissance Woman given her diverse interests in music, theatre, bridge and travel as well as service to her church and the girl guides.

DKG Quebec President 1989-1991

Dr. Burns was a professor of Educational Administration at McGill University. She grew up in Iowa and Nebraska. In 1968, she attended Stanford University, where she was one of the first women in the doctoral program in education. As a teacher and advisor, she was able to recruit many new members to DKG Quebec. Mildred was recognized as an author (“Values Based Planning for Quality Education, The Wolfe Pack, Redstone Manor: High Hopes), leader and mentor. In 2007, she received the Governor General’s Award in Commemoration of Persons Case for her substantial contributions to promote the equality of women. The Dr. Mildred Burns Award for Leadership in Education was established at McGill University. In 2011, she was awarded the Montreal Council of Women’s Woman of the Year Award for her contribution to Education. Mildred also served on the MCW board for many years. Mildred acted as DKG Quebec Parliamentarian for a number of years, and served as Area Representative for Canada (1994-1996).

DKG Quebec President 1965-67

Marianne Davis was one of the founding members of DKG Quebec in 1956. In honour of her 100th birthday, the Early Educator Award was renamed The Marianne Davis Early Educator Award. Marianne started her teaching career in a rural school and became an elementary school consultant for the Protestant School Board of Montreal.

DKG President 1956-1958

Evelyn was a founding member of the DKG Quebec, and was its first President. Miss Eaton’s career began in 1929 with the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal and spanned thirty-five years. While teaching at Fairmount Elementary and West Hill High schools, she earned a B.A. from Queen’s University in 1942 and an M.A. from Middlebury College, Vermont in 1947. In 1944 she became the first female Supervisor of French and in 1958 was promoted to Coordinator of French, a post that she held until her early retirement in 1964. In 1950, she was awarded the Order of Scholastic Merit by the Government of Quebec. She was co-author of several French textbooks used in Quebec elementary schools. In retirement, she worked as a volunteer student advisor at McGill’s Royal Victoria College, and from 1971 to 1977, she taught English as a Second Language to senior federal officials. She will be remembered for her pioneering work in second-language teaching, her innovation in curriculum development, and her groundbreaking success as an educational administrator. She was also awarded an honorary Life Membership of the Provincial Association of Protestant Teachers of Quebec in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the Association and to the teaching profession.

DKG President 1993-1995 and 2009-2011

The first woman Director at the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal. Standing her ground in a male-dominated environment, Miss MacLeish ensured that women were given a rightful place in the shaping and running of the schools in her Region. In addition to her commitment to DKG, Ann was active within the groups at the PSBGM, the Church, the Women’s Institute, QPARSE, Montreal Council of Women, and Robinson House.

Phyllis began her teaching career at Cedar Park Elementary School in Pointe Claire and worked as a classroom teacher for the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal. As a traveller, she attended regional and international DKG conferences as one of the few Quebec representatives.

DKG Quebec President 1987-1991

Dr. Jean Huntley Maynard was a respected and well-loved teacher. She taught all grades at the Elementary level, Latin and English at High School level, English and Humanities at Marianopolis College (1976-1997) and Composition at University level. In 1992, she completed her Doctorate in Administration and Policy Studies in Education at McGill University. She was a very active member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society. She retired in her favorite place, Harbourville, where every day she could admire the Bay of Fundy. In retirement, she became an avid Celtic quilt artist. This led to starting her own business, Keltica Quilt Designs. Her quilts were known internationally.

DKG President 1977-1979

Nancy was a career teacher extraordinaire. Nancy ended her career as a consultant with the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal. She was a super mom, a dear friend to so many and a highly respected woman in her church, her community and among her peers. She was an active member of DKG Quebec and held many executive positions such as Corresponding Secretary.

Elizabeth grew up in the Eastern Townships on a farm. She raised her family in Arvida where she was a dedicated teacher at Saguenay Valley. As her children grew up her teaching career at John Grant High School took up a larger place in her life and she later became a Vice Principal at the Protestant School Board of Montreal.

DKG Quebec President 1969-1973 ; 1985-1987

Norma served as Parliamentarian for many terms, as well as on many committees over the years. Norma was well respected and admired by our members who appreciated her vast knowledge of the Society. Members, who attended conventions with Norma, recall how she was held in high esteem, and of the many contributions she made to local and International conventions. Norma retired from the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal in 1980 where her last position was Vice-Principal of West Hill High School. Before and after her retirement Norma remained very active in the Girl Guides and Ste Matthew’s Church A.C.W.

DKG Member

From 1943 to 1974, she was employed by the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal, where she served as a classroom teacher for every grade, as a music specialist, as a French supervisor, and as a school vice-principal and principal. She was Academic Dean of Vanier College (1974 to 1979), Director General of the Association of Jewish Day Schools of Montreal (1979-1981), and Director General of Dawson College (1981-1985). Sarah’s notable achievements include: her pioneering work from 1962-1966 as an on-camera teacher and script writer for the Quebec French School Telecasts; her successful negotiation, in 1982, of Dawson College’s purchase of the Mother House of the Congrégation de Notre Dame; and her role as Vice President of La Corporation des Célébrations du 350ième Anniversaire de Montréal, the committee that planned the city’s 350th birthday festivities. In 1970, she was appointed to the Board of Governors of McGill University, becoming the first woman ever to be appointed to its Executive Committee (1974) and the first woman ever to be named a Governor Emeritus (1987). In 1992, McGill University awarded her an Honorary Doctorate of Laws. Sarah was appointed to the Order of Canada in 1996. Delta Kappa Gamma Sarah Paltiel Award for Excellence in Education was established in her honour at McGill University.

Dr. Helen (Zirczy) Saly, a valued and proud member of Beta Chapter. Helen served the society in many capacities with pride and respect. Dr. Saly retired from the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal where her last position was Head of the French Department at Westmount High. Hélène was active in the Westmount Historical Society. In 1967, with her students she produced and published “Old Westmount: the story of Westmount in Pictures and words.” Dr. Saly’s students remember her as thoughtful and kind. Because of the French connection, we at Gamma Province affectionately referred to her as Hélène using the French pronunciation.
